Origin story

I was born, and then endured some of the things that people endure. A difficult childhood. Difficult relationships. Anxiety, suicidal despair. The highs and lows of alcohol and drug use.

After studying philosophy and law at the University of Sydney in my 20s, I had the breakdown I needed to have and discovered the world of psychotherapy.

Training and study

I’ve trained in Gestalt psychotherapy and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), and studied psychology at the University of New England.

In therapy with relational therapist Chris Campbell, I learnt relational therapy. In therapy with Gestalt therapist Tanya Loydell, I learnt somatic-experiential therapy. Doing supervision with clinical psychologist Eric Belling, I learnt the nuts and bolts of the mainstream psychology-industry machine.

In the world

I’ve worked at the Buttery drug rehab, ACON, NSW Health, and in private practice.

I’ve been published in the Sydney Law Review and the Journal of Gambling Studies, and my groundbreaking but tortuously titled book The Cicada and the Bird: The Usefulness of a Useless Philosophy (Chuang Tzu’s Ancient Wisdom Translated for Modern Life) received mixed reviews from family and friends.

Outside of work

I live in Lennox Head with my wife, daughter, two dogs, and cat. As time allows, I jog the Boulder Beach coastline, let the dogs drag me wherever their noses lead, and mow the lawn.
