wherever you are

A middle-aged man with curly, dark hair and a light beard, smiling in front of lush green tropical plants, wearing a blue denim shirt.

If you’re an adult struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, or alcohol and drug use, I can help. If you want an ADHD assessment or another psychological assessment, I can do that.

Based in Byron Bay, I work with people across the Northern Rivers, including Lennox Head, Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Ballina.

What I do

Counselling and psychotherapy

What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy? The short answer: nothing. For a slightly longer answer, click here.

I do counselling and psychotherapy
with adults (18+)
to change
‍ ‍anxiety, stress, panic,
‍ ‍depression,
‍ ‍trauma and PTSD,
‍ ‍alcohol and drug use,
‍ ‍relationship difficulties, and
general malaise,
and to
know yourself better.

I’m an approved therapist for the DVA, WorkCover, and the Victims Support Scheme.

Formal assessment & diagnosis

I assess and diagnose ADHD (adult) and other psychological conditions (autism, bipolar disorder, PTSD).

Do you need a formal diagnosis? Not for counselling and psychotherapy. You only need a formal diagnosis if you’re applying for funding of some sort or to get certain medications. The question of formal diagnosis is a tricky one, and I discuss it further here.

About me

Hi. I'm a registered psychologist and psychotherapist based in Byron Bay, serving the Northern Rivers and beyond.

Experience

I’ve got 25 years clinical experience in a variety of contexts. The Buttery drug rehab, ACON, NSW Health, private practice. I 'm practical and down-to-earth. I've sat across from a lot of people in a lot of different settings, and that's shaped how I work.

Gestalt

My general therapeutic approach is Gestalt psychotherapy. This is a type of therapy that supports you to relax into your innate spontaneity so that you feel fully engaged with yourself, others, and the world. For a bit more detail, click here.

ACT

I sometimes teach the ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) model. This is a simple, practical model that helps you to make space for whatever it is that you happen to be feeling so that you can get on with living the life you want to live. For a bit more detail, click here.

What therapy looks like

Sessions run for 50 minutes and are available in person at my Byron Bay practice or by video link wherever you are.

Collaborative

You know your life better than I ever will. I know a few things about how people get stuck. We talk and we work out what’s going on together.

Reflective & Practical

I help you to slow down so that you can notice things you normally rush past. (Even if you sit still in a chair all day and stare at a wall, there are things your attention rushes past.)

From this slowed down, attentive place, I explore with you to find a new way to act. It’s usually something small. That’s why it works. A meaningful small change makes a big different in your day-to-day life.

Each session, you leave with something to think about and something to do.

If you’re unsure where to start, get in touch and I’ll guide you through the options.
